This website serves as a critique of the United State’s portrayal of sex work in the media. Audrey Moore, a sex worker and writer, says “A lack of realistic representation of Sex workers’ lives in media only contributes to a dehumanising attitude, and pushes sex workers further to the margins when it comes to the way society sees these workers.” The website is designed to both engage and inform the viewer.

Topic_1: Sex Work In Video Games

Video Games often depict sex workers in a stereotypical way. According to a study of Sex workers in video Games, “Video Games such as GTA firmly ingrains into impressionable minds that sex workers deserve violence, offer nothing of value, and are there to be used. It doesn't help that many sex workers in games will either offer your character services at a discount - or for free - and if they don't, you can likely kill them and steal it back.” The design of this page is meant to mirror a video game interface in addition to highlighting the problematic theme of treatment.

Topic_2: Sex Work in New York City

The design behind this page is inspired by New York City streets. The page utilizes scrolling as its primary mode of navigation to loosely parallel its transit system. The color red is used more in this page due to the infamous “Red Light Districts”. This page also includes a button. When clicked the entire web page is covered in walking men, also known as “johns” in New York’s Red Light District. They over run the page and represent the real problem of the Sex Trade: Demand. This page identifies New York City’s Red Light districts and documents what police and media’s coverage as of 2023. The city claimed to be arresting more johns and acknowledging that many of the sex workers found in these districts were victims of trafficking.

Topic_3: The Glamorization of Sex Work

The way sex work is portrayed in media and cinema is either glamorized, sneered at, pitied, or inevitable tragedy. This visually stimulating page symbolizes the many ways sex workers are portrayed in recognizable ways. The visual over-stimulation is representative of the unimaginable amount of dollars in profit media has made off of this occupation with little to no realistic or beneficial representations of who a sex worker is and what they actually endure on a daily basis. When hovered over, a movie card appears detailing the thematic portrayals of each.

Topic 4: The Violent Reality

This page details the violent reality Sex workers face and the overlap between Sex Work and Sex Trafficking. The page is  visually similar to police and forensic reporting. It is unorganized, just like the system that ignores them. The page includes links leading to articles of missing women who were disregarded due to their reputation as well as studies detailing the high volume of violence sex workers endure.
